We tend to consume media passively, absorbing advertisements and propaganda like toxic radiation. Without conscious criticism of what we take in, our idea of what is normal becomes dangerously suggestible. Wholesome Living highlights the inherent artificiality and absurdity of our buzzword-laden consumer culture, providing a warped reflection of reality just close enough to the truth to be uncomfortable.

Veronica Smith is a senior Writing major and Women’s Studies minor who lives in an attic with her cat, Farnsworth. Her short story “Lungs” appeared in the 2011 issue of Stillwater, and her short story “Pillow Talk” was one of the winners of the 2012 Ithaca College Writing Contest.  Her post-graduation plans are murky at best and dismal at worst. She enjoys cutting pictures of fish out of science books to tape to her wall and telling Farnsworth that he is a very good boy.

Justin Billing is a senior writing major at Ithaca College. When he’s not designing satire magazines, he can be found sitting on his bed playing the bass guitar, or trying to decide whether or not the word “poet” applies to him. He is interested in group storytelling and presenting consumers with media that demands their input. When he isn’t investing himself in creative writing pursuits and publishing internships, he spends an inordinately large amount of time building the world of his Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

Matt Whelan is a senior Writer major and Environmental studies minor at Ithaca College. Instead of following his heart and pretending to be Vladimir Nabokov for four years, he has occupied his time with mostly grant, proposal, and technical writing. He spends most of his free time running amok in the woods, yelling at computers to work, and supporting local music.

Erica Schillbach

Editor

Erica Schillbach is a senior Writing major/English minor at Ithaca College. She is the captain of her Equestrian team at Ithaca College. Post graduation, Erica plans to continue on to Grad School at Ithaca College at the Park School of Communications. She also enjoys photography (mainly Instagramming), people watching, and creative ways to make a pretty penny. When she isn’t writing, she’s riding, and when she isn’t riding, she’s writing. Though when she is not doing either, she is trying to learn Swedish from her roommate (it’s never very successful).

Jacquelyn White

Editor

Jacquelyn is a senior writing major at Ithaca College, with acute interests in literature, art history, and feminist studies. Her fictional work has appeared in The Copperfield Review, and she has an essay to be published in the Spring 2013 Issue of Cerise Press. Of course, you can also find smatterings of her work in Wholesome Living. When she's not working on the magazine, she can often be found reading or having long conversations about death with her housemates. She also likes long walks on the beach (go figure).
